The Boatkin
I came across this bag via a news article and I was so intrigued and confused. A Boatkin? What is this? Made by Hathaway Hutton, it is a canvas tote bag based on the Birkin style retailing at $1580.00 US dollars. Not only that, the fabric is also used vintage and uniquely individual. I had to do some more investigation on TikTok to understand the hype.
To manage expectations on the website there is a disclaimer stating ‘While I clean the canvas very well (like… with a power washer) there may still be stains that you will see from water, dirt, pen, dogs, life, etc. Some totes have writing on the front or back..’ so what you are getting is a reworked one of a kind bag.
What is especially interesting in my opinion is the distressed/unfinished look which looks undecidedly unfinished! There is a strict no refund policy just store credit at best for a return. I am not sure who the target market is exactly (that is open for interpretation), but I am intrigued beyond measure and considering there is a six month waiting list, clearly I am not the only one!
